Australian Magpie
The common name for these birds can be confusing. Australian magpies are not Corvids, but in fact belong to family Artamidae. They are more closely related to Butcherbirds. These cheeky and characterful birds come to my garden throughout the day to feed and make mischief. When I come downstairs in the morning, they will often warble their hearts out in a lovely welcome. Here, I caught one just preparing to take off from my garden wall.
40 cm length

The Australian magpie is a medium-sized black and white passerine bird native to Australia and southern New Guinea. Although once considered to be three separate species, it is now considered to be one, with nine recognised subspecies.
