Widefooted Treehopper nymph (Campylenchia latipes) Recently molted. On Trifolium sp. at the edge of a dense mixed hardwood/coniferous forest in NW Georgia (Gordon County), US. May 25, 2018.
From what I'm reading, Campylenchia latipes is the only treehopper species in the east with a forward-facing horn/pronotum. This "horn" mimics the structure of thorns, providing some camouflage and defensive benefit to the treehopper. Additionally, there is some evidence that treehopper pronota serve as sensory and pheromone dispersal structures!
