The right hand photo is a close up of the paired wing samara which when dry will spiral to the ground. The “helicopter” action prolongs the flight allowing the samara to travel further afield. ''Acer macrophyllum'', the bigleaf maple or Oregon maple, is a large deciduous tree in the genus ''Acer''. Big Leaf Maple can grow up to 48.10 metres tall, but more commonly reaches 15–20  tall. It is native to western North America, mostly near the Pacific coast, from southernmost Alaska to southern California.
