Elfin Saddle (Helvella latispora group)
Habitat: Growing gregariously in leaf litter under hardwoods at the top of a ridge in a dense mixed hardwood/coniferous forest in NW Georgia (Gordon County), US. April 27, 2018.
Pileus: Gray to brown, smooth. Saddle to irregularly shaped. Some two-lobed and flattened against stipe. Underside white to cream and pubescent.
Stipe: Smooth to slightly pubescent (near apex), cream to white, very tough/firm.
Odor: Sweet and pleasant.
''Helvella latispora'' is a species of fungi in the Helvellaceae family, Pezizales order. Ascocarps appear in late summer and autumn as pale stems up to 5 cm in height topped by a greyish saddle shaped cap.
