Christmas Fern Fiddlehead
The young fiddleheads are silvery and scaled.
Unlike some native ferns whose fiddleheads are edible, Christmas Ferns are questionable as to whether they are safe to consume and may require extensive preparation. However, they have been used traditionally in Native American medicine.
''Polystichum acrostichoides'', commonly denominated Christmas fern, is a perennial, evergreen fern native to eastern North America, from Nova Scotia, Canada west to Minnesota and south to Florida and eastern Texas.
