Dana's Viperfish (Chauliodus danae) One of three species of Viperfish that I have been able to photograph - this is Dana's Viperfish (Chauliodus danae). Trawled from between 1,500 and 1,200 meters depth, Gulf of Mexico, on a DEEPEND research cruise (www.deependconsortium.org). Note the rows of photophopres (bioluminescent structures) that span the length of the fish on the flanks. The lower portion of the fish is also encased in a clear gelatinous tissue.
