Google-eye (Xenophthalmichthys danae) from the Gulf of Mexico. The Google-eye, Xenophthalmichthys danae, from the family Microstomatidae, has been found in the tropical Pacific and Atlantac Oceans, including the Gulf of Mexico.  It has been captured down to depth approaching 1600 meters.  Nothing has been reported on its biology or ecology except for the fact that it does not apparently have a swim bladder.  The body of this fish is long and slender (to 10 cm), with a silvery, metallic color.  It has large, forward facing eyes and a small mouth.  The eyes may be used to detect bioluminescence.  This individual was captured between 900 meters depth and the surface in the Gulf of Mexico, 2011.   1. This one reminds me of the legendary telescope fish you posted, yet with a much different mouth. I was curious as for the full body of this fish but did not find much, did find this illustration:

''Xenophthalmichthys danae'' is a species of pencil smelt found in deep waters to 1,250 metres . This species has been found in the western Pacific Ocean and the Atlantic Ocean and is suspected to be circumtropical. This species grows to a length of 10 centimetres SL.
