The Blind Congo River Spiny Eel (Mastacembelus brichardi) lives in the turbid waters of the Congo River.
The Blind Congo River Spiny Eel, Mastacembelus brichardi, has eyes but they are covered by a layer of connective tissue. These eels inhabit rapids areas in the Lower Congo River, Africa. The water in the Congo River is turbid and light falls off within the first meter in depth such that by two meters depth, the water is dark; these eels basically live in water as dark as in a cave or the deep sea. The species averages 14cm total length but can apparently reach 17cm. This specimen was photographed in 2011.

Mastacembelus brichardi, the Blind Congo River Spiny Eel, is a species of spinyback that lives in the dark water column of the Congo river.
