A Brasilian Blindcat (Rhamdiopsis krugi) - an obligate subterranean species. Blindcats are found in several subterranean systems around the world; Brasil is no exception. Catfish in the genus Rhamdiopsis have little pigment and reduced or no eyes; Rhamdiopsis krugi has been observed to spend much time in the midwater, exploring the water column. Because food is a limiting factor for these catfish, it is not thought that all individuals breed each year. Brasilian blindcats are potentially threatened by over extraction of groundwater and contamination of it. The species is only known from groundwater in the state of Bahia, Brazil. This specimen was photographed in Brazil, 2011.
