  1. A quick hello from California! This cute little woodpecker, an oak specialist, has a surprisingly restricted range, and is practically endemic to California, though it is pretty common in the state. I almost missed him, and only finally connected with one this morning, on the last day of my trip here! Plus, I am breaking in my new camera, as I finally made the move to Canon, so it's my first photo on JD taken with the new glass! Posted 7 years ago
    1. hi Thibaud, wonderful species with indeed a surprisingly small range. Congrats on the camera, we know it is in good hands! Posted 7 years ago

Nuttall's woodpecker is a species of woodpecker named after naturalist Thomas Nuttall in 1843. They are found in oak woodlands of California and are similar to the ladder-backed woodpecker in both genetics and appearance.
