Young Water Monitor Lizards being friendly We saw these 2 very young Water monitors in a stream near our hotel on Tioman Island, Malaysia. This is quite rare (only 1 of the 17 pictures on JungleDragon show more than one) as monitor lizards are cannibals and frequently will attack and eat each other (I have seen large ones chase smaller ones). I suspect that these are being so peaceful because they are siblings, but I wasn't sure. Geotagged,Malaysia,Tioman Island,Varanus salvator,Water Monitor,Winter Click/tap to enlarge

The Asian water monitor, also called common water monitor, is a large varanid lizard native to South and Southeast Asia. It is one of the most common monitor lizards in Asia, ranging from Sri Lanka and coastal northeast India to Indochina, Malay Peninsula, and Indonesian islands where it lives close to water.
