The American Bittern doesn't visit my area often so I was very happy to find this specimen while out at the Clyde Shepherd Nature Preserve in Decatur, GA today.

  1. When I saw your post, I was convinced there must be a system error to indicate this as a species intro, perhaps because of a synonym or duplicate name. But no, it really is a new species to the platform :)

    And an incredible capture of it, stunning detail and love the inclusion of the habitat in the shot.

The American bittern is a species of wading bird in the heron family of the Pelican order of bird. It has a Nearctic distribution, breeding in Canada and the northern and central parts of the United States, and wintering in the southern US Gulf Coast states, all of Florida into the Everglades, the Caribbean islands and parts of Central America.
