Swell Shark Egg Case (Cephaloscyllium laticeps) The egg case of an Australian Swell Shark is a laterally flattened flask-shaped capsule (13 cm x 5 cm) with transverse ridges. At each corner were tendrils that looked like coiled fishing line. The capsule and tendrils looked like a large fish lure &amp; line as it lay amongst rocks. Studies show that the length of the tendrils depend on the wave action in the area.<br />

  3. When I first spotted this egg case I was quite cross thinking it was a large lure with the fishing line attached to it - I thought how irresponsible these fishermen were ! Isn't the shape amazing. The habits of the shark are interesting and amazing too.. Posted 7 years ago

The Australian swellshark or draughtboard shark is a species of catshark, and part of the family Scyliorhinidae, endemic to southern Australia. This bottom-dwelling species can be found on the continental shelf down to a depth of 220 m . Usually measuring 1 m long, it is a stout-bodied, broad-headed shark with a short tail and a first dorsal fin much larger than the second. It can be identified by its variegated dorsal coloration of brown or gray patches and numerous spots.
