Sooty-capped puffbird, Uraba, Colombia
Not cropping this first sight of this bird as to cherish the memory of this magical moment. In our 2017 trip, this is by far the most valuable bird spotting when it comes to rareness. This puffbird is endemic to Colombia, and within it, restricted to a small range in the northwest. Within this small range, it is uncommon to see.
Seeing it far away in a small clear space in the canopy had the team electrified. We were jumpy anyway as our top 3 list of birds in these mangroves were all found in the first 5 minutes, quite a streak!
After this initial observation it flew overhead and landed close behind us:

The sooty-capped puffbird is a species of puffbird in the family Bucconidae. It is endemic to Colombia. Its natural habitats are subtropical and tropical moist lowland forests and arable land. It is threatened by habitat loss.
