Rare Clubmoss This plant has a superficial resemblance to conifers. However, it is much smaller and the above ground parts rarely reach more 15 cm tall. The plants I spotted were 10cm tall or less. Interestingly, the main stem is a creeping rhizome that grows below ground. Unfortunately, the harvest of rare clubmoss has caused it to become threatened in several areas. I spotted a lot of these growing on the ground in a mixed, swampy forest while out doing a homeschool science lesson with my kids. They thought these plants were baby pine trees :) Dendrolycopodium obscurum,Geotagged,Lycopodium obscurum,Rare Clubmoss,United States,Winter, club moss, clubmoss Click/tap to enlarge PromotedSpecies introCountry intro

  1. This one raised my eyebrows a bit too. I normally have to set the division and class for plant species manually, because Wikipedia reports them as clades. I've done this so many times that I'm used to the values being either eudicots or monocots, so highly surprised to see "Lycopodiopsida". Only 5 of those on the platform. Posted 7 years ago

"Dendrolycopodium obscurum", synonym "Lycopodium obscurum", commonly called rare clubmoss, ground pine, or princess pine, is a North American species of clubmoss in the family Lycopodiaceae. It is a close relative of other species such as "D. dendroideum" and "D. hickeyi", also treelike.
