Wiley Slough - Fir Island - Washington This is an interesting place - it's an old tidal estuary that had once been diked off to created farmland, but has now had many of the dikes breached to allow it to begin to return to it's natural state. The restorers did not however, completely remove the stands of trees which had grown up in the area. Many were topped, but otherwise left. The salt water, of course, killed them quite quickly, so now there's a "forest" of debarked, topped trees standing in certain areas, that attract a lot of birds, especially the larger ones - hawks, eagles, woodpeckers. There's even an active eagle nest - yup, up the tree in the distance, that big tangle is an eagle nest. If you zoom in, even at this size, you can still make out the mama eagle standing watch.
