Tawny Owl chance encounter in the woods near our house
This tawny owl seems to roost in the chimney of an abandoned forester's shack in the woods where we live and one time we were very fortunate to see it appear when there was enough daylight for a picture. The photo is not great quality, but it is very rare to get so close to an owl (I had to climb onto the roof) in the wild.
The Tawny Owl or Brown Owl is a stocky, medium-sized owl commonly found in woodlands across much of Eurasia. Its underparts are pale with dark streaks, and the upperparts are either brown or grey. The nest is typically in a tree hole where it can protect its eggs and young against potential predators. This owl is non-migratory and highly territorial. Many young birds starve if they cannot find a vacant territory once parental care ceases.
