Yucatan woodpecker (Melanerpes pygmaeus)

  1. Another Yucatan endemic, a cute and confiding little fellow, a miniature version of the Golden-fronted woodpecker. It's distinguished by the yellow nasal tufts that make it look like it's just been pollinating lily flowers. Confusingly enough, the golden-fronted woodpeckers found in the Yucatan have red, not yellow nasal tufts (see wildlifeonwalkabout's photos), as they do northern Mexico. Unfortunate naming, but makes it easier to tell the two apart in Yucatan! Posted 7 years ago
