African Bush Elephant baby crossing the road in Addo Elephant NP Although I had often heard that you should never let African elephants get in behind your car, we had stopped to watch some elephants bathing and we were suddenly surrounded by a herd coming from the other side including several babies like the one pictured here. They turned out to be oblivious to us though, so there was no danger just a wonderful wildlife viewing opportunity. The African bush elephant is the larger of the two species of African elephant. Both it and the African forest elephant have usually been classified as a single species, known simply as the African elephant, but recent evidence has seen the forest elephant classified as a distinct species . Some authorities still consider the currently available evidence as insufficient for splitting African elephants into two species.
