Monarch Caterpillar
Monarch larva with a complex banding pattern of white, yellow, and black stripes. The white dots on the prolegs, in addition to the large size of this caterpillar (4 cm long) indicate that this either a 4th or 5th instar larva. This caterpillar seems to have recently molted since it's shed skin was right behind it.

The monarch butterfly or simply monarch is a milkweed butterfly in the family Nymphalidae. Other common names depending on region include milkweed, common tiger, wanderer, and black veined brown. It may be the most familiar North American butterfly, and is considered an iconic pollinator species.
