Morel Morels are hollow from bottom of stem to top of cap, and the bottom of the cap is attached to the stem. Honeycomb-like caps are longer than the stems and are full of ridges and pits. "Morchella americana" is a species of fungus in the Morchellaceae family native to North America. Described as new to science in 2012, it is common east of the Rocky Mountains in a range stretching from Ontario south to Texas, Arkansas and South Carolina.
