
Catocala vidua - Widow Underwing Moth
Large Erebid moth with pale gray forewings with prominent black lines. 80mm wingspan or greater. Reniform spot surrounded by a white ring. Hindwings black (with blue hues) with white fringe. Almost a perfect camouflage against pine bark!
Habitat:
Dense mixed hardwood forest in Northwest Georgia (Gordon County), US. Perching on a pine.

The widow underwing is a moth of the Erebidae family. It is found from southern Ontario, into Maine, New Hampshire and Connecticut, south at least to Tennessee, Georgia and Alabama, west to Texas and Oklahoma, and north to Wisconsin.
The wingspan is 70–80 mm. Adults are on wing from August to October. There is one generation per year.
