Common Opossum at night, Montezuma, Colombia
A lucky nightly encounter with an opossum. They are not uncommon, just hard to photograph, especially at night when I typically don't have the correct lens on. About the size of a domestic cat, they have a tendency to hang out near human settlements, checking trash and other easy food sources. You could call them the South American racoon for that.
In this instance, it made a mistake to flee into the edge of a pond where we had it surrounded, which positioned me to do a shot close enough for the macro lens which I had on. We of course let it go on its way after that.

The common opossum , also called the southern or black-eared opossum or gambá, is a mammal species living from the northeast of Mexico to Bolivia , including the Lesser Antilles, where it is called manicou. It prefers the woods, but can also live in fields and cities. The common opossum is sometimes used for food in poorer areas by humans.
