Body laterally flattened, grayish white to yellow in color, with a large black saddle blotch on the base of the tail (H. unicolor). Iridescent blue dorsal-ventral lines on the head, sometimes extending to the leading edge of the ventral fins. One distinct blue line encircles the eye. Two black pigments spots are sometimes found on the snout region. Ventral fins yellowish, pectoral fins clear.<br />

The Butter Hamlet, ''Hypoplectrus unicolor'' is a hamlet from the Western Central Atlantic and is found in Florida, the Bahamas and throughout the Caribbean. It is absent from the Gulf of Mexico. It occasionally makes its way into the aquarium trade. It grows to a size of 13 cm in length.
