  1. I am happy to say that these magnificent beasts are protected in parts of the Western Ghats (Palani Hills, South India). They were roaming freely in and around the township about 5 to 6 years ago. I hope their habitat remains protected so they don't come into close contact with people. Posted 7 years ago

The gaur, also called Indian bison, is the largest extant bovine and is native to South Asia and Southeast Asia. The species is listed as vulnerable on the IUCN Red List since 1986, as the population decline in parts of the species' range is likely to be well over 70% during the last three generations.
