Boomslang - One of the most poisonous African snakes up-close and personal On our travels, we are always on the lookout for reptiles, especially large or poisonous or even better, both. Staying in de Hoop Nature Reserve in South Africa, we were advised to be cautious when walking around due to the presence of Puff Adders, Cape Cobras, and these guys. Well, we didn't get to see the other two, but we surprised one of these in the lodge garden and enjoyed watching it. Although they are most famous for being tree snakes (the name in Afrikaans means "tree snake"), I was amazed at how quick and agile it was on the ground. It gave me a few thrills when I tried to photograph it! Boomslang,De Hoop NP,Dispholidus typus,Geotagged,South Africa,Spring Click/tap to enlarge

  1. Wonderful find, Barry! Do you also have the 3rd person syndrome? Where when looking through a viewfinder you ignore all danger? I have this with snakes. Posted 7 years ago

  2. Love Boomslangs, we used to have a pair live around the house and yes, they can certainly shift! I never worried about the danger as you would have to manage to catch one first, they are extremely shy. I did however once have that '3rd person syndrome' Ferdy mentioned, then I realised that Slippy was actually heading towards me!
Look forward to the shark photos!

  3. By the way, not wishing to appear picky but...snakes are not poisonous, they are venomous. Poisons are eaten, venom is injected (bite). :) Posted 7 years ago
    1. I never knew that difference. In dutch there's only a single word for it so we don't make this distinction :)
Similar to how tortoise and turtle are a single word in dutch, hence I always get it wrong in english.
