Toucans are known for their beautiful bills. Their bills take up at least 1/3 of their entire body size and while they may look heavy and cumbersome, they are actually remarkably light. A toucan’s bill is hollow bone covered in keratin. So, it’s extremely light, but super hard. And, of course, it’s used for more than just eating! A toucan’s bill has a rich supply of blood vessels that run along its surface and helps regulate the bird’s body temperature. In fact, toucans appear to be able to alter the blood flow to their bills in order to control how much heat is being conserved or lost! Since birds can’t sweat, this is a valuable tool to control body temperature. {Keel-billed Toucan (Ramphastos sulfuratus) spotted in Panama by Tarsier} #Toucan #Ramphastossulfuratus #KeelbilledToucan
