I made this picture before I had my macro lens. I did some experimenting with a budget macro extension tube in combination with my 18-250mm superzoom lens. Because the macro tube prevented communication between lens and camera, the camera records the aperture to 1. It's like a default value in case no other information is there.
Not long after the macro tube I bought a real 1:1 macro lens. Setting focus with the macro tube was difficult so you ended up moving the camera back and forth and try to push the trigger without moving the camera (because that would ruin the focus). Most pictures failed and a good one like this was more luck than skill.
The macro tube still works on my macro lens. It increases the maximum magnification from 1 to 1.5, but that is only needed for insects smaller than 3mm or so. Posted 13 years ago, modified 13 years ago
