  1. Love it! Does anybody know the name of this species? Posted 13 years ago
    1. Sure. It is the Brown Argus (Aricia agestis).

Very beautiful picture! In my opinion, this picture almost reaches photographic perfection.

      1. Now that's a trustworthy identification service! Thanks mate. Posted 13 years ago
      2. I don't think so. The wings of the left one are blue. Moreover, two of the spots on the leading edge of the hindwing are relatively close in the Brown Argus, almost forming a "figure of eight", but are more spaced apart in the Common Blue. http://www.ukbutterflies.co.uk/species.php?species=icarus
There are a few other Blue species though (Polyommatus thersites, Polyommatus eros, etc.), which are hard to discriminate, especially when you only have one side of the wings.

The common blue butterfly is a butterfly in the family Lycaenidae and subfamily Polyommatinae. The butterfly is found throughout the Palearctic. Butterflies in the Polyommatinae are collectively called blues, from the coloring of the wings. Common blue males usually have wings that are blue above with a black-brown border and a white fringe. The females are usually brown above with a blue dusting and orange spots.
