Juvenile Grass Snake on a path in a German Forest
Although this seems to be a fairly common species, I have only seen them in over 30 years of walking around in German forests. They are also a protected species in Germany. Oh yes, and they look really cool with that yellow collar.

The grass snake, sometimes called the ringed snake or water snake, is a European nonvenomous snake. It is often found near water and feeds almost exclusively on amphibians.
