  2. Firstly - what an enjoyable, striking image! Secondly, I've lived on the coast of New South Wales for 21 years and have never seen this species of gull. I note 'moderately common' and even 'scarce' in some parts, written in the notes. I'm going to keep an even keener eye as this is one gull I'd love to encounter. Thank you :) Posted 6 years ago

Thanks Ruth, it is true that they are not that common, but as an enthusiastic birder, I always carefully check out any gulls I see because occasionally you do see less common ones and sometimes even rarities. I was really lucky with the photo though, it just posed there allowing me to get fairly close and make a good image. Thanks again for the kind remarks. Posted 6 years ago

The Pacific Gull is a very large gull, native to the coasts of Australia. It is moderately common between Carnarvon in the west, and Sydney in the east, although it has become scarce in some parts of the south-east, as a result of competition from the Kelp Gull, which has "self-introduced" since the 1940s.
