Saguaro Flowers/Fruits The Saguaro cactus is famous for being the iconic Hollywood Western cactus (not to mention Lucky Luke) but you don't see the flowers very often. We visited southern Arizona in late July - strangely enough their rainy season, and many cacti were in bloom, including these. 1. Here's a shocker: did you know that most Americans have no idea what you're talking about when you refer to "lucky luke"? Posted 8 years ago
    1. Haha, excellent point - I have been in Europe so long that it didn't even occur to me. In Germany everyone knows the stories about the American West of Karl Mai (Winnetou and Old Shatterhand) but Germans couldn't believe that I had never heard of them when I first came from California. 2. These are actually ripe fruits, the flowers are white. They bloom earlier from April to June.

    1. Good point - although to play the pedant, you can still see the withered flowers still there! Posted 8 years ago
      1. You can certainly see them but they are not in bloom ;) Posted 8 years ago

The saguaro is a tree-like cactus species in the monotypic genus "Carnegiea" that can grow to be over 12 meters tall. It is native to the Sonoran Desert in Arizona, the Mexican state of Sonora, and the Whipple Mountains and Imperial County areas of California.
