  1. Looks like Trogon violaceus? Posted 8 years ago
    1. It does look a lot like it. I based identification on the official checklist of the trip, which only has the Green-backed Trogon in it. Just double-checked the book. Based on size, distribution and in particular the white eye ring and chest and crest being both all blue, I still believe this is the green-backed one, but feel free to correct if I'm overlooking something. 1. I'm not an expert in Birds, just happened to come across similar looking bird from another forum.
From Wikipedia, it is mentioned :

Violaceous trogon has been split into the following species:

        Guianan trogon, Trogon violaceus
        Gartered trogon, Trogon caligatus
        Amazonian trogon, Trogon ramonianus

So, you can try to verify further, it could be Gartered trogon, Trogon caligatus which is also recorded from Columbia.

        1. I don't agree, Albert. All of the three have stripped tail, which is not the case for the bird in this spotting. I would believe in the experience of the guides and the list they provide for the common species of the area. Posted 8 years ago
        2. I already did that, Albert. None of those 3 species have the combination of characteristics I mentioned: all white eye ring, blue chest and crest. I agree though that they are hard to distinguish. Posted 8 years ago
      2. I agree with the Green-backed ID. See here both for comparison of a male of each species:

I have a spotting of trogon violaceus here in JD but is showing the back:

Still, you can see that T. violaceus has a stripped tail.

        1. Thanks for confirming, and didn't see at first how the striped tail is the best way to distinguish them. Posted 8 years ago

The Green-backed Trogon, also known as the Amazonian White-tailed Trogon, is a near passerine bird in the trogon family. It is found in tropical humid forests in South America, where its range includes the Amazon, the Guiana Shield, Trinidad, and the Atlantic Forest in eastern Brazil.
