  1. Hi Jivko,

This is not Chrysomela populi, but some Chrysolina. In the Netherlands it would certainly be Chrysolina polita (about half the size of Ch. populi), but I'm not sure about the range of species in Bulgaria and Fauna Europea's search function is completely messed up :-/
I'll ID it as polita for now, but please check with your national checklists for similar species
    Cheers, Arp

    1. Hi Arp, It was a big discussion in one Facebook group about this photo. But the 2 discussed species were Chrysomela populi and C. tremulae.
I agree with your identification. In fact the size of the female was not bigger than 8 mm, while the C. populi is about 10-12 mm.
According to Fauna Europaea Chrysolina polita is distributed in Bulgaria.
      Thank you
      Jivko

    2. BTW, in Fauna Europaea you have to search only by genus, and than you have all the species listed below. If you search by full scientific name the result is 0! I don't know why.

      1. I get very mixed results lately. If I search for Chrysolina in Bulgaria I get a list of 50 species none of which is even a Chrysomelidae and it is impossible to search for Chrysomelidae in Bulgaria (no results). In fact the new site has never worked for that, so I continued to use the old site, but they shut that down the other day due to outdated technology and hackattacks. I have contacted the maintainers and they plan to get the old functionality working again, but for the moment it's pretty much unusable allas.
My point was that I have no convenient way now to quickly see what Chrysolina species are known from Bulfgaria, so I can't see if there are any other lookalikes, but polita certainly is a very, very probable kandidate anyway ;o)
        Cheers! Arp
