Grey Wagtail in the Himalayan Foothills While hiking around the Himalayan foothills of Nepal, among all of the exotic birds, we saw one of these old friends from Europe. I have always wondered about the name, since the color that grabs your eye is yellow not grey. I much prefer the German name, Gebirgestelze, which translates to "Mountain Stilt". The grey wagtail is a small member of the wagtail family, Motacillidae. The species looks similar to the yellow wagtail but has the yellow on its underside restricted to the throat and vent. Breeding males have a black throat. The species is widely distributed, with several populations breeding in Europe and Asia and migrating to tropical regions in Asia and Africa.
