  1. Some resources about Australian lichens are available here. They are not easy to identify either.

  2. Thank you , I have this one already but can't get much from it.
I did better with www.inatualist.org and found 11 recordings but only one with a photo which looks ok but has no details of identification . I gues for now another one which will take time to work out.

    1. I just send a reply but not sure if I did it correctly . Sorry Posted 8 years ago
  3. Wildflower I did send a request for help to bowerbird .org.au to see if someone can help to identify this species of cup lichen. Rainer Richter who I personally don't know send his identification as Cladonia chlorophaea . I know that Rainer Richter is a strong and constant contributor to bowerbird.org.au
    What do you think.

    1. I am not confident in discriminating between the species of Cladonia. Reiner Richter doesn't seem to be an expert in lichens either.

      1. There are more than 70 species recorded for Australia
        http://bie.ala.org.au/species/NZOR-4-28250#classification
Reiner Richter is a specialist in odonata. He has a very good general knowledge. Cladonia chlorophaea is feasible. I will ask about the confidence of his ID when I see him next week, otherwise a guess is entirely meaningless.
Based on my experience with chrysomelidae beetles, even experts make errors.
Lichens are even more difficult to identify in my opinion.

  4. I am only aware of Reiner Richter seeing his active participation on the bowerbird website and I appreciated his input. But you are correct there are 70 plus species recorded in Australia but not many suitable photos to help identification. Or maybe I just haven't found them. I do however appreciate the determination from the controllers of the jungle dragon website to make sure that any identification is correct. I hope also that you get the chance sometime to catch up with Reiner Richter and talk to him about this issue. Thank you Martin it is very much appreciated Posted 8 years ago
  5. Hello Ernst, I happen to concur with your initial ID of Cladonia chlorophaea. This web page shows that it has been found in Australia, https://www.inaturalist.org/taxa/49488-Cladonia-chlorophaea . It is common in my neighbourhood and your photo is too similar to other photos of the species to be some other Cladonia. Posted 5 years ago
    1. Hi Gary.
Thank you very much for your work. I must say that now two years later there seems to be more info on Cladonia chlorophaea in Australia.
      Thanks again

      1. Hello again, we have lots of it around here,
Frosty Pixiecups! Cladonia chlorophaea, Mealy or Granulating Pixiecup, is a Cladonia lichen that have goblet shaped cups with granular or powdery soredia on the outside of the cups and podetia, a distinguishing feature of this Cladonia. It is found on many different substrates but near my home likes moss covered rocks. 15 minutes after taking this photo the frost was gone.<br />

        1. I also find them now but only because now I can see them since the first one-
Check out this distribution map for C. chlorophaea in Australia. That was not available
when I was searching for info at the time

          1. That is interesting! I have been informed, both our daughter and son-in-law are molecular geneticists at UBC, that lichens have been studied a lot in the last couple of years. That may be just one of the factors making more info available now. “It’s a good thing”... for us. Posted 5 years ago
