Calathea is a genus of plants belonging to the family Marantaceae. There are several dozen species in this genus. Native to the tropical Americas, many of the species are popular as pot plants due to their decorative leaves and, in some species, colorful inflorescences.

Calathea crocata also known as eternal flame is native to Brazil. It is an evergreen rhizomatous perennial. The ovate green leaves are feathered grey-green above and reddish beneath. The orange-red flowers are borne in a short, erect spike of orange bracts. After sunset, the leaves fold up.
