Yacare Cayman in Pantanal

This fellow was eyeing me during a call of nature break on a sandbar in a river of the Pantanal while we were looking (unsuccessfully) for jaguars. if you look carefully, you can see a large fly with bright green eyes right between its eyes.

Looks like a horse fly. I can relate to not seeing jaguars, it's quite a rare thing, depending on location of course. Posted 8 years ago

  Well, I have written more about my jaguar story elsewhere - that is a big part of the fun with observing nature, you never know what you may see. The horse flies in the Pantanal were bad. They didn't bother us too much (no, the Chiggers took care of that) but everytime we got close to a Caiman, there were always several flies around their eyes. It must drive them crazy.     I imagine they do. I recently read that they are 20 times faster in the air compared to house flies.

The Yacare caiman

The Yacare caiman is a species of caiman found in central South America, including northeastern Argentina, Uruguay, southeastern Peru, eastern Bolivia, central/southwest Brazil, and the rivers of Paraguay. About 10 million individual Yacare caimans exist within the Brazilian "pantanal", representing what is quite possibly the largest single crocodilian population on Earth.
