The Giant South American Grasshopper You don't expect grasshoppes to be as big as your hand but this one is. They show quite a bit of regional variation, this is the Yucatan version. 1. Yes, one can well imagine the terror that a whole host of these filling the skies would have induced in Biblical times! Posted 8 years ago
  2. Nice one!
By the way, no need to be surprised about species intros. We have about 12,000 species described now. Of course some simple and common ones may be there, but the vast majority isn't :)

The giant South American grasshopper is a species of grasshopper in the family Romaleidae. The giant South American grasshopper rose to fame when one was spotted landing on the arm of James Rodríguez, after he scored a goal during Colombia's 2–1 defeat to Brazil, at the quarter-finals of the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
