The Western Black Widow spider It may be in California, but it is hardly laid back and has a highly venomous bite. Believe it or not, this was taken at my sister's house in Carlsbad, California (near San Diego). When she told me that they had some, I insisted on looking all around in the evening until we found some. Unfortunately, the only camera we had available was a little instamatic - which is why the quality is so poor, but it was great to see what is probably the most famous spider. By the way, as to the famous "eating the male" behaviour, there is an evolutionarly explanation of this which I have described here:
<img src="https://s3.amazonaws.com/media.jungledragon.com/images/2/9382_thumb.jpg?AWSAccessKeyId=05GMT0V3GWVNE7GGM1R2&Expires=1759968010&Signature=bRvF7QCOLF78hApuvcrAw05M9Jo%3D" width="200" height="134" alt="Madagascar Golden Orb Spider (Nephila madagascariensis) A fairly common spider across Madagascar, large to very large, producing spectacular webs, sometimes communal webs. 1. Nice find! I didn't notice the limited camera, maybe I was too afraid :)
By the way, you're description is missing the actual link. Also, perhaps this is a nice addition for your "venomous" list?

    1. Thanks Ferdy, I tried to put in the link, but for some reason when I went to copy it and came back to this image all of my comments were gone when I tried to add it - so I figured I would just wait a bit - and as you see, it worked! Posted 8 years ago
