Komodo dragon in landscape Ok, I realize that there is a human (me actually) in this picture of a huge Komodo dragon taking a morning stroll, and that I could have easily cropped it out, but I think that leaving it in is better because then you get a good feeling for how big this animal really is (which is often not the case with pictures of Komodo dragons). The human in this picture is 1.75 m tall and the dragon is easily twice the size. That means that if Komodo dragons could stand on their hind legs (a terrifying thought), they would have looked down on the hapless human. As a final note, they appear slow when walking about but are apparently capable of dramatic bursts of speed when they want. So if you go to their homeland - do what the National Park guide says! 1. I really liked what you did here, Barry, it does add value to show a person in this scene. I did not realize they were *this* big. Posted 8 years ago
    1. Thanks Ferdy, yes they really are huge, and potentially dangerous, although I don't actually recall being afraid or nervous - and despite the fact that all we had as defense was the guide with a notched stick! Posted 8 years ago

The Komodo dragon is a large species of lizard found in the Indonesian islands of Komodo, Rinca, Flores, Gili Motang, and Padar. A member of the monitor lizard family, it is the largest living species of lizard, growing to a maximum length of 3 metres in rare cases and weighing up to approximately 70 kilograms.
