Dumeril's Madagascar Swift at Isalo NP This lizard has a positively ridiculous name - you think that it is a bird when you first see it. What is distinctive about this lizard close-up, are the tiny red points that you can see on the neck and shoulder. I assumed that these were ticks when I first looked at the picture but sniffing around the internet has me tending more to mites. Any brilliant ideas? 1. I agree that they may be mites, but not entirely sure. At least it is something I've seen on several photos of several species. Example:

Red-Velvet mite nymphs parasitizing a scorpionfly female. University Campus Kortowo-Olsztyn, Poland (July, 2011).
This scorpionfly suffers from an infestation of Red-Velvet mite nymphs, as tentative ID Trombidium rowmundi.
1. Yeah, I did my doctoral thesis on fruit flies (Drosophila melanogaster) and keeping them in the laboratory mites were the bane of my life! Posted 8 years ago
