Seychelles Blue Pigeon

A lovely unique pigeon that looks like nothing else - called by the locals the French flag bird due to the colors. They are very common all over the island of Praslin where we stayed and frequently hung around the pool while we relaxed in the sun. One of the easiest of the SEychelles endemics to observe.

  Yeah, pigeons all look pretty similar in Europe and North America, but in the South East Asian islands they can look really bizarre. Alas, the most bizarre, the Dodos (they were most closely related to pigeons), are long gone (despite my photos!). Apparently, no one knows what they actually looked like since no skins survived and all we have in museums are skeletons. Posted 8 years ago

    I heard the same thing is true for dinosaurs, we just fantasize about their skin texture, color and patterns, but really are just guessing. Posted 8 years ago

Well, you are basically correct about dinosaurs, but rather amazingly, I recently heard that using biochemical techniques they were able to analyze some fossilized pigment molecules from a dinosaur skin fossil and could determine that it had a dark and light stripe pattern. Posted 8 years ago
