  1. Very interesting. Madagascar is my favorite wildlife country, despite having traveled there twice, had not seen this species, but also not visited that park. Posted 8 years ago
    1. Thanks. Yeah we loved Madagascar. Interestingly, we went in June and all of the tour operators told us we were crazy and that the birds and wildlife were SOOO much better in October. Well, we couldn't go in October, so we went in June - ok, maybe we missed the breeding plumage of a bird or two, but on the plus side, we were the only guests in most of the lodges and all of our jungle walks were private. It was fantastic! As to Zombitse, it isn't one of the biggies like Ranomafana or Andasibe, but it offers some great wildlife very close-up. Posted 8 years ago
      1. We went in October 2012 and September 2015, and in both cases we were virtually the only ones everywhere we went. In 2012 this was due to tourism being hit badly just after the revolution, in 2015 we went to the north which seems to be very thin in tourism. Posted 8 years ago
        1. Wow, that sounds really cool. I always have mixed feelings about this though. On the one hand, being away from the crowds is wonderful (we were the only guests in our hotel on the beach and we had a whole 2-floor "house" to ourselves - the restaurant would ask us when we would like to eat and what we would like!), but on the other, if only a few people come, the countries won't preserve their nature. On the whale shark tour, one young woman on our boat said that she was worried that we would distub the whle sharks, but the Mexican guide said that if it weren't for the tourists, the whale sharks would probably be hunted. 1. That is a fair point and very true. Madagascar only has 3% of its original forests left, and even those area, even when declared a national park, are still continuously under threat. Posted 8 years ago
