  1. Valuable species intro, excellent! Posted 8 years ago
    1. I was lucky to run into that guy at all! There are two diurnal raptor species left in New Zealand, the falcon, and the Australasian harrier. The harrier has benefited enormously from the large agricultural expansion, and you'll easily see 4 or 5 daily (and yet because I always saw them from moving cars, I never got a good photo!. But the falcon has suffered a lot, and it is now restricted to mountainous regions, and not at all common. This was the only one I saw, and it caught me completely by surprise, as I didn't have the telephoto! Fortunately, my compact has a decent zoom. Posted 8 years ago
      1. Nice! I see the same thing in the Netherlands: if not for urbanization, we consume pretty much every inch of land for agriculture, which has destroyed nearly all wild vegetation. That said, small birds of prey do very well on these large open fields as they can easily spot small rodents. Posted 8 years ago

The New Zealand falcon or ''kārearea'' is New Zealand's only falcon and the only remaining diurnal bird of prey endemic to New Zealand. Other common names for the bird are bush hawk and sparrow hawk. It is frequently mistaken for the larger and more common swamp harrier.
