  1. Kudos for capturing all this! I've visited a few tropical forests and have passed by thousands of interesting plants, no doubt, but I just would not know where to start in identifying them. Posted 8 years ago
    1. That's usually my case as well, but having JD in mind, I asked people for plant names whenever they could provide them:-) Also, quite a few reserves have discovery trails with plant labels, so that helps a lot! Posted 8 years ago

''Pseudopanax crassifolius'', horoeka, or lancewood, is a New Zealand native tree belonging to the family Araliaceae. It is found throughout New Zealand from sea level up to about 750 m. The juvenile form, which lasts for between 15 and 20 years, is very easily recognized. The leaves are stiff and leathery with a prominent central rib, about 1 cm wide and up to 1 m long with irregular teeth, all growing downwards from a central stem.
