    1. Yes, they help entomologists with identifications.
      Seriously,they are fine pores that go through the wings, also on the shiny ones which are just finer, so you cannot see them. I think the coarseness has more to do with the genetic limitations of the genus than any other functionality.
      Rugosity does hold moisture droplets well, which would assist in arid climates. Beetles in treetops access drinking water from morning dew. It also increases surface area but not sure if that is demonstrated to be of much use. They would warm and cool more quickly.

Paropsisterna liturata is a glossy leaf beetle common in the Blue Mountains around Sydney. The black region of the elytra can vary and be almost absent.
