I was initially confused about the species on the photo. Due the light circumstances, the head looks light orange, yet in the shadows (another photo) it looks deep red, which brings out the Bay-headed tanager as prime candidate.

The bay-headed tanager is a medium-sized passerine bird. This tanager is a resident breeder in Costa Rica, Panama, South America south to Ecuador, Bolivia and southern Brazil, and on Trinidad.
