Coral Santa María swamp, Colombia
Exciting times in Colombia (once home to the largest snake to have ever lived, the Titanboa). During our first night tour we were traversing a swampy area when we found this coral snake. Although venomous, it posed no threat and was mostly trying to get away from our bright lights. I checked for all coral snakes known to occur in Colombia, and Micrurus mipartitus is the best match I can find. I particularly based the identification on the general dark and light bands with a clear orange band near the head, visible in this second photo:

The redtail coral snake is a species of coral snake in the family Elapidae. It is found in South America and Central America.
