Fresh Malaysian Orchid Mantis Molt (Adult) Forgive the poor quality image, I was unable to get the camera in the vivarium without disturbing her. She is about 40 minutes out of her old skin and has just finished unfolding her wings and wing cases. I took a time lapse with my DSLR so I'll see how those images came out as they show her literally a few minutes for breaking free from her old skin. Such an amazing experience. Spent over 2 hours watching her molt and getting ready to assist if she fell etc. Hymenopus coronatus,Malaysian Orchid Mantis Click/tap to enlarge

  1. Thanks for documenting the process, Stuart! Is this Molly? If I recall her name correctly. Posted 8 years ago
    1. Hi and a Happy New Year to you! Unfortunately Molly had a full and spoilt life and she went to Mantis heaven a while back, she was a Chinese Flower Mantis. This little madame that you see is Malèna. I think that this Orchid species is my favourite, they are so pretty! Posted 8 years ago
      1. Happy new year to you as well! I'm wondering what the typical life span of a mantis is? Posted 8 years ago
        1. Depends on the species and conditions but the orchid mantis lives for up to date year. Other species such as the Giant African Mantis live for 12-18 months apparently!

''Hymenopus coronatus'', also called ''H. bicornis'', is a mantis from the rain forests of Southeast Asia. It is known by various common names including ''walking flower mantis'' and '' orchid mantis''. It is one of several species known as flower mantises from their resemblance and behaviour.
